History
Ancestors of the boxer are seen all across Europe as far back as the 16th century and are even seen in European artwork, hunting boar and stag (boxer-dog.org). Their ancestors are the two breeds; English bulldogs and an old form of Tibetan Mastiffs called the Bullenbeisser. However, it has also been rumored that they may be related to the Spanish Alano, Perro do Presa, Douge de Bordeaux and Bouleduge de Moda (boxer-Dog.org). The Boxer breed was defined by the Germans and is known to be from Munich. Boxers are in the working class of dogs, and were bred for their strength and abilities. They were originally used to help hunters with wild boar, because they could hold the boars down, while the hunters had time to catch and kill it. They were also used as guard dogs to protect the families and have been known to do some work around the farms, like hauling and pulling carts.
