Predisposed Health Conditions
The Florida Boxer Rescue (2013) details various health conditions that the Boxer breed is predisposed to. Among them are acne, cancer, demodicosis, hip displaysia, Histiocytic Ulcerative Colitis, and Hypothyroidism. While Boxers may never develop any of these health conditions, proper care and grooming as well as regular check-ups are recommended to nurture the health and well being of the Boxer. For further information on these conditions, see below.
Hypothyroidism – Deficiency in the thyroid hormone which can cause fatigue and weight gain.
Acne – Usually resulting from hair follicles which have clogged.
Histiocytic Ulcerative Colitis – Alchin (2014) states that it is a “chronic inflammatory disease of the bowel that occurs almost exclusively to the Boxer. It can cause diarrhea and is ultimately incurable."
Cancer – Lymphoma and mast-cell tumors are among some of the cancers which Boxers are predisposed to.
Hip Displaysia – Displacement of the hip joint leading to degenerative joint disease.
Demodicosis – Mites on the skin causing irritation and affecting the immune system.
Life Expectancy
Alchin (2014) states that the average life expectancy for the Boxer breed is 10-14 years.
